Pelorus Interclub 19 May 2018

May 21, 2018 by Les

Marlborough Harrier Club hosted the Nelson Clubs to a cross country event at Pelorus on Saturday. It had been some time since we had Nelson over by invitation. Very pleasing to see approximately 40 people turn up for this mini event.
The event was held as a non-competitive event but we all know when Harriers get together there will always be this element of competitiveness.  Knowing this it was decided between Marlborough and Nelson we take the times of 1st, 5th, 9th, 13th and last from each side of the hill, add them up and it is the least total accumulated times that wins.
Marlborough came in with 5 hours 31 minutes 18 seconds.
Nelson came in with 6 hours 4 minutes 20 seconds.
This made Marlborough the winner.
In the words of David Bendell “Great run on Saturday – pleasant conditions –
Caught up with some of my harrier friends from Nelson/Waimea. A tough run up to the “trig” and around a loop, albeit around 7kms but I was still out for 1hour 23 minutes very pleasant thro lovely beech/punga forest. Good solid run with a good catch-up over afternoon tea.”

Everyone enjoying afternoon tea and a chat at Pelorus

Dry conditions greeted those contesting the Marlborough Harrier Club’s oldest trophy race, the Burton Cup Sealed Handicapped Cross Country at Taylor Dam on Saturday afternoon. All competitors started on go with their finishing times altered according to their sealed handicap. Made for some interesting running and results.
Unfortunately an accident on top of the Dam to one walker meant other walkers coming from behind stopped to assist thus no recorded time for them.
The handicap systems works so as to give every competitor, no matter what their ability, an even chance of winning their grade.

Novice Cup results 7th April 2018

April 8, 2018 by Les

Off “go” athletes into it

Overcast and firm footing conditions prevailed for those that contested the Marlborough Harrier Club’s Novice Cup Handicapped Cross Country event at Taylor Dam on Saturday afternoon. The change in course meant everyone had dry shoes at the end.
The handicap system works so as to give every competitor, no matter what their ability, an even chance of winning their grade. In theory everyone in their respective grade should cross the finish line together. The handicappers did a good job with most competitors coming in within a short time. We had all grades represented from under 7’s to veterans. Great to see so many children getting out and enjoying themselves.
The next race at Taylor Dam is for the Burton Cup which is one of the club’s oldest trophies. This will be held on 7th May and once again all competitors will start off on handicap. However, it will be an extra challenge for seniors, veterans and walkers who will all step up to longer distances on the day.

Churchward Park Harrier sign

February 25, 2018 by Les

New signage at Churchward Park

You Committee of 2017 decided last year we needed to lift our profile telling people where our garage is and also lift the profile of the Club.
Marlborough District Council allowed us to erect the sign and the journey commenced. We started off with a design and wording because Council needed to know what the sign said for their approval.
It was with that design Les McKay approached Liz Valk of Valk Designs to come up with the finished article to produce to BBSigns. Liz very kindly donated her design skills and time to the Club. This donation is really appreciated so if anyone is looking at any design work whether it be signs, website, logos then do phone Liz.

On Saturday a working bee was held and we now have the sign in prime position.
Thanks go out to the Committee for making this happen. Special thanks to Allister Leach and Bill Hunter for organizing the working bee, Bill Hunter for dealing with BBSigns in making the sign, Les McKay for dealing with approval from council then getting the end result designed by Valk Designs.

Job completed!
