The Molesworth Run 2013

The competitive winter season may be over but Marlborough athletes have been in action around the country in an event packed last week:

Rabbit Island Rampage 5th October 2013

Carolyn Brown on her way to a SI Masters Gold

Robbie Barnes and training partner Dale Smit won the half marathon and 10km run events respectively. The 21k distance doubled up as the South Island Masters Games half marathon event. Carolyn Brown won Gold in the F55-59 grade with a time of 2:05:40 and Robbie’s 1:19:27 also won Gold in the M50-54 grade.

South Island Masters Games 5th-13th October 2013

Not content with winning the half-marathon Robbie continued his rampage into the other South Island Masters running events, winning another gold in the 5km M50+ grade with a very sharp time of 17:41 (2nd overall) and yet another M50+  gold in the Dun Run (which doubled as the cross country event) with 1:51 (3rd overall).

Joanne Farrell ran a fast 21:34 5km to take Gold in the F45+ grade and Ray Waters ran unopposed in the 5km M75+ grade to win Gold with an impressive 29:56.

Wairarapa Half Marathon 13th October 2013

Tracey Sims put in a solid performance in the hilly Wairarapa half marathon coming home in 2:08:24 (14th F35-44)

Prosser Cup & Prize-giving 2013

Stuart Curnow is the holder of the Prosser Cup. The last event on the official club calendar for the 2013 season the cup is raced on handicap. Up until this year it was contested around the streets of Blenheim before being moved to Hawkesbury Road for safety reasons. The Prosser Cup doubles as the Women’s Road Handicap and Emma Jones claimed this title. Robbie Barnes recorded the fastest actual time for the 8.2 km distance.

Carol Ryder won the walking section while Sheila Waters recording the fastest time then followed by Leanne Barnes and Hellen Munro recording a dead heat. Winners in the childrens grades were Angus Kopua, Amber Bendell, Hunter Bendell, Emily Munro, Bailey McKay, Anna Barnes and Hannah Munro.

Childrens prize-giving followed the afternoon racing. Luke Jones received the Vulcan Trophy awarded for the Most Promising Midget (12 and under) Boy. Amber Bendell won the Western Trophy awarded to the Outstanding Midget (12 and under) Girl.

Senior prize-giving saw Steve Olsen awarded the President Trophy (Best Club Spirit), David Smit received the Presidents Supporters Cup and Tracey Sims was presented with the John Western Memorial Cup for sportsmanship. Hellen Munro was named Most Improved Walker. The Anita Neal Trophy for Most Improved Runner was awarded to Anna Barnes and Robbie Barnes was named Marlborough Harrier of the Year.

Queen Charlotte Relay 2013

The annual Queen Charlotte Relay was contested by 45 running teams and 4 walking teams on Saturday. Beginning at the Waitohi Domain, Picton the relay wove a course through the picturesque Queen Charlotte Drive to finish outside the Havelock Hotel.

Wet weather throughout much of the race meant that the course record of 1 hour and 50 minutes was never threatened.

Teams from Marlborough, Christchurch, Nelson and Wellington were entered.

Overall line honours went to the Athletics Nelson Open Mens team in a time of 1 hour, 59 minutes and 12 seconds; more than a minute ahead of the Victoria Gold team from Wellington. Bounce With Us was third overall a further five minutes back.

The major spot prize, a bike kindly donated by AvantiPlus Blenheim was won by Kate Gaudin, competing for the local CrossFit Womens team.

Fairhall Road Race 2013

img_8223Ray Waters won the Annual Road Race 7 Mile Cup that is presented to the winner of the main race. Ray also collected the Veteran Fairhall Trophy (affectionately known as the Burglars Trophy) awarded to the first Veteran Man home. Robbie Barnes recorded the fastest actual time for the 9.2km distance.

Hellen Munro won the walking section and Judith Hyndman recorded the fastest actual time. Winners in the childrens grades were Amber Bendell, Hunter Bendell, Lucy Bendell, Bailey McKay, Anna Barnes and Hannah Munro.

NZ Road Champs 2013

Photo by Sharon WrayRobbie, Jess and Anna Barnes represented Marlborough Athletics at the NZ Road Champs held in Dunedin on Saturday.

Robbie finished 4th in the Mens 50-54 Age Group completing the 10km course in a time of 36min 58sec. Jess was 11th in the Women 18-19 Age Group over the 5km course. Her time was 22min 54sec. Anna competed in the Girls 10-12 2km event finishing 5th in a time of 8min 33sec.

Photo by Sharon WrayMeanwhile Roseanne Robinson a former Marlborough Harrier Club member finished runner-up in the Women 20-34 1okm race walk. Roseanne who currently resides in Christchurch but competes for Otago finished in a time of 53min 37sec.
