Queen Charlotte Relay 2015

 The annual Queen Charlotte Relay was contested by 52 teams on Saturday afternoon. 

Starting at the Waitohi Domain in Picton the relay wove a course through Queen Charlotte Drive to finish outside the Havelock Hotel.

Despite the near-perfect conditions, the course record of 1 hour and 50 minutes was never threatened.

Teams from Marlborough, Wellington and Nelson were entered with the latter dominating the top places throughout most of the grades. Particularly pleasing for organisers was that 31 of the teams entered contested the social running grade and many of these 

comprised business house and sponsors teams.

Overall line honours went to the Athletics Nelson Senior Men’s team in a time of 2 hours 04 minutes and 51 seconds, almost five minutes ahead of the Athletics Nelson Junior Men’s team. The Marlborough Harriers Senior Men’s team finished third overall a further five minutes back. The first women’s team across the line was the Athletics Nelson Senior Women’s team who finished 4th overall.

Individual major spot prizes went the way of  Sean Timoney, Bids Taylor, Sam Boyce, Devon Payne and Rae Heta while the teams ones were collected by Marlborough Harriers Veteran Women’s and Waimea Mixed Social.    

Junior Men’s Team results: Athletics Nelson 1st (2 hours, 09 minutes and 47 seconds) (2nd overall) – Sam Mead, Cameron Jones, Max Schneider, Max Meffan, Nick Matthews Hairy A**e School Boys 2 (2.38.46)

Junior Women’s Team results: CrossFit JUNIORS 1st (3 hours 18 minutes and 02 seconds) (47th overall) – Morgan Gurr, Abella Yuen, Jana Sloot, Libby Grigg, Emma McManaway

Senior Men’s Team results: Athletics Nelson 1st (2 hours, 04 minutes and 51 seconds) (1st overall) – Angus Wemyss, Jared Lautenslager, William Wallace, Thomas Littleworth, Kalani Sheridan  Marlborough Harriers 2nd (2.14.12), Victoria University 3rd (2.25.22)

Senior Women’s Team results: Athletics Nelson 1st (2 hours, 18 minutes and 34 seconds) (4th overall) – Beth Versey, Sami Jordan, Sophie Smith, Eloise Beattie, Bridie Edwards Go Girls 2nd (2.37.00), Not Fast But Fabulous 3rd (3.11.00)

Veteran Men’s Team results: Athletics Nelson M60 1st (2 hours, 26 minutes and 21 seconds) (7th overall) – Hans Andersen, Mike Morrissey, Ian Carter, Chris Bolter, Derek Shaw Waimea Men 2nd (2.31.28), Marlborough Harriers 3rd (2.46.04)

Veteran Women’s Team results: Waimea Women 1st (2 hours, 43 minutes and 13 seconds) (20th overall) – Liz Coke, Robyn Deane, Fran Kerse, Eileen Beattie, Debbie Bamfield CrossFit Angry Birds 2nd (2.54.30), Marlborough Harriers 3rd (2.59.30)

Social Team results: Average Joes 1st (2 hours, 23 minutes and 42 seconds) (5th overall) – Thomas Westend, Todd Nicholas, Patrick Dawkins, Kirk Nicholas, Josh Cody Wire Runners 2nd (2.28.00), CrossFit We Thought They Said Rum 3rd (2.31.23)

Fairhall Road Race 2015

The Fairhall Road Race was contested in difficult conditions around the Ben Morven Circuit on Saturday afternoon. All competitors started on handicap and battled into a biting head wind at the start of their respective races.

home overall in the main race. Being the first Veteran Man across the finish line he also collected the Veteran Fairhall Trophy (affectionately known as the Burglars Trophy). Robbie Barnes recorded the fastest actual time over the 9.2 km circuit and Kay Leach won the walking section.

Winners in the children’s grades included Gemma Bishell, Amber Bendell, Jayden Lucas, Hunter Bendell and Sam Hamilton.

Club Road Champs 2015

Cool and overcast conditions aided those competing in the small but competitive fields at the club road champs on Saturday. These were held on the Grovetown circuit.

Margaret Hazelwood headed home those contesting the 5km distance and in doing so won the Veteran Women’s 55+ crown. Tracey Sims won the Veteran Women’s title and Judith Hyndman the walking section. Hamish Hargest won the Senior Men’s title contested over 10km while Peter Mann and David Bendell won the Veteran Men’s and Veteran Men’s 60+ titles respectively. Children’s titles went the way of Amber Bendell, Dylan Gibson and Hunter Bendell.

The veteran men also competed for the Guerin Trophy which is decided by way of a sealed handicap. The winner will be announced at the end of season prize-giving.

5 km time trial 25/7/15 at Riverlands circuit.

The Marlborough Harrier Club held their time trial on Saturday afternoon, using a new course starting at the Riverlands Hall, The time trial is used by Club handicappers to gauge the speed of runners and walkers leading into the road race portion of the calendar that sees a number of handicapped events taking place.

Boys 7 and under:            1st Lucas Neilson – 04 minutes and 55 seconds

Boys 12 and under:             1st Hunter Bendell – 09 minutes and 47 seconds

Boys 14 and under:          1st Sam Hamilton – 14 minutes and 38 seconds
5000 metres
Senior Men:                          1st Hamish Hargest – 17 minutes and 07 seconds
Veteran Men:                        1st Robbie Barnes – 18 minutes and 04 seconds

Armstrong Motor Group Wellington Marathon 2015

Don Bate, Ron Adams and Sarah Gunningham joined almost 4500 other runners and walkers in perfect conditions in the capital on Sunday for the 30th anniversary of the Armstrong Motor Group Wellington Marathon.

It was a huge sporting weekend in the capital city with the Hurricanes vs. Highlanders super-rugby final held the night before at the same venue used for the marathon start-finish.

Don and Ron contested the half marathon run while Sarah tackled the 10km run.

Shoe Clinic Half Marathon (1,260 finishers)

Don Bate 1hr 40min 22sec. (19th M50-59)

Ron Adams 1hr 45min 24sec. (29th M50-59)

Mizuno 10km Run (1,105 finishers)

Sarah Gunningham 1hr 05min 49sec. (71st F50-59)

Club Cross Country Champs 2015

The club Cross Country Champs were held at Stranraer Farm, Okaramio on Saturday afternoon. Fine weather guaranteed a good afternoon of racing and the course was in excellent condition.

Amber Bendell, Hunter Bendell, Margaret Hazelwood, Kiri Johnson and Rab Rodger successfully defended the titles they won last season while Ned Love, Adam Baker and Bruce Hillis won their first club championship titles.

Other winners were Sam Hamilton, Emma Jones and Jeremy McKenzie.
