Overcast conditions greeted those contesting the Novice Cup at Taylor Dam on Saturday afternoon in the first handicapped event of the 2015 season.

For the first time in the event walkers also started off handicap and produced the closest finish of the day with just three seconds separating Emily Burgess and Alison Brook.

The next race at Taylor Dam is for the Burton Cup on Saturday 2nd May and once again all competitors will start off on handicap with seniors, veterans and walkers stepping up to longer distances on the day.

One of the largest fields for a number of years assembled for the scratch races at Taylor Dam on Saturday afternoon. A lot of newcomers, including families took part and weather conditions were ideal.  These races are used by the club handicappers (who like chocolate) to calculate estimated times for up-coming handicapped events starting with the Novice Cup on 11th April.

Winners on the day were Fletcher Kopua, Neve McKenzie, Luke Jones, Amber Bendell, Hunter Bendell, Sam Hamilton, Anna Barnes, Judith Hyndman, Anna Archie, Jan Curnow, Hamish Hargest and Robbie Barnes.

Bruce Hillis and Anna Barnes headed home the club members who competed in the popular but hilly Kaiteriteri Gold Half Marathon and associated 10km event on Saturday.
Bruce Hillis, Jodie Brown and Michelle Harris all tackled the half marathon run while Anna and Bill Hunter contested the shorter distance.
Half Marathon Run (101 finishers):
Bruce Hillis 1hr 45min 48sec. (2nd M50-59)
Jodie Brown 1:57:56 (4th F40-49)
Michelle Harris 2:10:18 (8th F40-49)
10km Run (98 finishers)
Anna Barnes 59min 14sec. (3rd FU18)

The closing night for Summer Runners was held last week with a pack-run/walk from Ron and Debbie’s. This was followed by a prize-giving and BBQ. The Smit Family Trophy awarded for the Summer Runner’s 5km Handicap was presented to Kathryn Mann. Dale Smit accumulated the most points over the season with a total of 85.

A big thank-you to Bill and Julie for organising another successful summer of Thursday runs and walks. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

The weather came to the party for those club members contesting the ever popular Buller Marathon 0n Saturday. Initial overcast conditions and a period of light rain aided in particular the marathon competitors prior to descent into Westport. We were well represented in both the 42.2km and 21.1km distances. Robbie Barnes, Lionel Graham and  Jan Curnow all recorded top-three finishes in their respective grades in the half marathon.

Near-perfect conditions greeted the 156 competitors who took to the Wither Hills on Saturday morning which included a record field of 33 in the walk. Competitors from as far afield as Australia, Auckland and Stewart Island were entered.

King of the Withers 2015 is: Jeremy McKenzie (41.49 and 1st Veteran Man)
Queen of the Withers 2015 is: Megan Craig (46.43 and 1st Open Woman)
1st Junior Man: Hamish Clark (53.44)
1st Junior Woman: Rebecca Forgesson (65.43)
1st Open Man: James Kuegler (45.47)
1st Veteran Woman: Di Cooper (52.12)
Ashley Toms won the hybrid and Natilde Folis was the first woman home.
Jonathan Martin and Clare Weyers won the walking titles.

The Rose Ag team of John Kennedy, Nick Rayner and Amon McGregor won the business house team event for the second successive year. Scott and Anna McDermid took the married couples title. Jeremy McKenzie was presented with the Dennis Patchett Memorial Trophy awarded to the first Marlborough Harrier Club member home.
