Novice Cup 2013

April 21, 2013 by Tracey

Despite heavy rain good competitive fields contested the Novice Cup at Taylor Dam on Saturday. The handicappers did an excellent job and racing throughout most of the grades was close.

The handicap system works so as to give every competitor, no matter what their ability, an even chance of winning their grade. In theory everyone should cross the finish line together. The closest finishes were in the Girls 12 and Girls 14 grades where just one second separated the first two placings in each event. The winners were Lucy Bendell and Anna Barnes.

The next race at Taylor Dam is for the Burton Cup which is one of the club’s oldest trophies. This will be held on Saturday 4th May and once again all competitors (with the exception of walkers) will start off on handicap. However it will be an extra challenge for seniors and veterans who will step up to longer distances on the day.

NZ Mountain Running Champs 2013

April 14, 2013 by Tracey

Representing Marlborough Athletics Robbie and Jess Barnes claimed their first national running titles on Saturday at the NZ Mountain Running Championships in Wainuiomata, Wellington.
Competing in the Mens 50-54 Age Group over the 9km distance Robbie outclassed race favourite Wellington’s Liam Healey to win by two minutes. Robbie’s winning time was 46.1 minutes. The undulating out and back course course with a couple of extra loops played nicely into Robbie’s hands. Despite drizzly overnight rain the course was in reasonably good condition throughout.
Colin Earwaker (Lake City) and Paul Sharp (Wellington) competing in the Mens 55-59 Age Group were the only two Masters Men ahead of Robbie over the 9km course.
Jess comfortably beat Hastings athlete Monica Burnard by more than four minutes to comfortably win the Junior Womens crown. Race favourite Monica towered over Jess and rocketed away at the start but it was Jess’s experience on the hills that saw her win in a time of 27.4 minutes over the 4km distance.
In addition to winning gold medals Robbie and Jess also won two of the eight spot prizes on offer.

Kaiteriteri Gold Half Marathon 2013

March 20, 2013 by Tracey

A large contingent of club members competed in the Kaiteriteri Gold Half Marathon and associated 10km event on Saturday. They joined more than 260 other runners and walkers on the start-line of the hilly but undulating course.

The standout performance came from Robbie Barnes who finished fourth overall in the half marathon run. His time was 1hour 24min 42sec. Nelson runners Phil Costley and Simon Leaning were first and second respectively. Brian Kemp from Waimea finished third.

By all accounts running conditions were excellent but the course was a very challenging one. It was flat for the first 100 metres before the first climb so no time to warm into the run itself.

Half Marathon Run (134 finishers):
Robbie Barnes 1hr 24min 42sec. (4th overall; M50-59)
Peter Dick 1:34:46 (9th; M40-49)
Ron Adams 1:47:08 (35th; M50-59)
Allister Leach 1:49:13 (44th; M50-59)
Kiri Johnson 2:06:38 (94th; FU40)
Steve Olsen 2:18:58 (116th; M50-59)

10km Run (112 Finishers):
